Call for Papers: The European SOCIETY FOR THE STUDY OF SYMBOLIC INTERACTION: “Conflict, Cooperation and Transformation in Everyday Life” Erasmus University Rotterdam The Netherlands July 4-6, 2012 The 2012 EU SSSI conference is being held in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The first conference was held in  Pisa (2010)  and the second took place in  Kassel (2011).  This year’s conference is organized around three interrelated themes: “Conflict, Cooperation and Transformation in Everyday Life”. These themes are generic qualities of the social worlds which are studied by qualitative researchers. But we tend to focus on conflict and social problems and by this we oversee and neglect cooperation and transformation. The conference will be a dialogue of scholars who are inspired by a qualitative interactionist approach of everyday life.        THERE MAY BE NO 'FREE WILL',  BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN THERE AIN'T 'AGENCY A recent series of reports has cast doubt on the existence of "free will".  According to Wikipedia: "Free will is the ability of agents to make choices free from certain kinds of constraints."   The same Wikipedia entry states that the constraint of dominant concern has been the "metaphysical constraint of determinism".
